Be it pomade, hair clay, or hair cream, there is an abundance of different products out there for many different hair types and hairstyles. Luckily, we here at Quarters Edinburgh have a team of experts to sort the chaff from the wheat and have gradually selected the very best of men's hair products from around the world.
Pomade is probably a word that you hear thrown around quite a lot these days, but often it's mistaken for anything that isn’t hair gel or hair wax. In actuality, pomades are best for those looking for a slicked-back style or classic pompadour with the shine of a gel but without drying out your hair. Pomades were traditionally made using petroleum (which is where the term “Greaser” came from) but these days most people prefer the water-soluble options like the Layrite Original Pomade,as it gives you the same malleable hold without being impossible to wash out at the end of the day.
Water-based pomades are also a perfect men’s hair styling product for those guys with sensitive skin or who are prone to acne. Being water-based means that they won’t strip your hair of its natural oils and won’t clog your hair follicles. Win-win!
If you do still want to go for the authentic greaser look then you can go for the Uppercut Deluxe Monster Hold, but be warned, you may also want to pick up a bottle of the Uppercut Degreaser to help wash it out.
If pomades sound like your bag but you aren’t wanting as strong a hold, that’s where waxes come in. Like pomades, hair waxes leave a shiny finish and don’t harden over time. If you want a messy yet controlled look and have relatively short hair, then waxes are most likely for you. If you have longer hair then you are better to go for something lighter like a cream.
Speaking of, clay hair products are pretty new to the hair styling scene but are becoming increasingly popular for a multitude of reasons. Firstly, they provide a strong hold that will last you throughout the day whilst leaving a soft, matte finish to your hair.
Secondly, the clay will coat the individual hairs, giving you a prodigious amount of volume and structure. Remember, the higher the hair, the closer to Jesus!
Lastly (and in our opinion, most importantly) clay is rich in minerals that have natural healing properties and nutrients to strengthen and replenish your hair and moisturise your scalp. This makes clay especially beneficial to those with curly or long hair as it tames the frizz and conditions all at the same time.

Finally, let’s talk creams. Creams are great for the types of guys that are dubious of hair styling products but want to look after their locks. Hair styling creams are generally much lighter than other hair care products so offer a much softer hold than their competing product types. If you have hair longer than 3 or 4 inches, simply apply the cream to towel dried hair and it will stay in the direction you want it to but will feel like you aren’t wearing anything in it. For curly hair, creams can also be used to tame the frizz whilst defining those curls.
If you really want to make the most of those natural curls then try the Layrite Grooming Spray to give you that wild beach hair look and let those curls do their thing. This spray can also be used before styling for easier control and to give your hair a thicker, fuller look.
One final point. Sometimes even if you find the right hair styling product for you and your hair type, you may still need something a little extra to get that do just right. That is where tools come in. At Quarters, we consider the best to be the Uppercut Quiff Roller. This handy little brush helps you get the lift and volume you need whilst drying. Use it to define those curls, lift that pompadour or slick back your hair ready for styling.
Whatever hair type you have, whatever style you want to go for, Quarters has something for everyone.
